Guild Wars’ first expansion has gone live and is now available for purchase from the Guild Wars Store at Plaync.com for $39.99.

Eye of the North advances the story and opens an unexpolored area of Tyria. The expansion also includes 18 multi-level dungeons, 150 new skills, 10 new heroes to aid you in your adaventure and 40 new armor sets.

“We think fans will find a lot to love in Guild Wars: Eye of the North,” said Mike O’Brien, co-founder of ArenaNet. “Not only do we go back to the original Guild Wars lands and stories to wrap up plots and themes fans have clamored to learn more about, but we’ve also built a bridge to the future through the Hall of Monuments. This will give loyal players a way to preserve what they’ve accomplished in Guild Wars over the past two years, and reclaim the legacy of their favorite characters in Guild Wars 2.”

Guild Wars 2 is expected to be in public beta in the second half of 2008. A cool addition with the expansion is the ability to take your armor sets, pets, and titles earned into Guild Wars 2.

Hit game may be the most popular MMO you’ve never heard of

With more than 3 million units sold, legions of passionate fans and heaps of critical acclaim, “Guild Wars” is probably the most popular massively multiplayer online game you’ve never heard of.

It’s easy to see why. Blizzard Entertainment’s “World of Warcraft” is a seemingly unstoppable juggernaut, with 8.5 million worldwide subscribers. “Burning Crusade,” the expansion to the original game, sold an estimated 3.5 million copies in just one month.

“Because of those big numbers, and because ‘WoW’ is the first subscription-based MMO that’s broken out of hardcore market, [Blizzard] gets a lot of attention,” say Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, the company that developed “Guild Wars.”

But small, scrappy ArenaNet thinks it has plenty to brag about, too. In seven years, Strain and its co-founders, have taken a pretty radical idea about online gaming and built it into a successful company. continue reading…

Glossary of Important Terms

Adrenaline= Every time a character attacks it gains one strike of adrenaline. Warriors and Paragons are able to use this adrenaline similarly to energy to perform attacks or use shouts. Adrenaline is similar to rage in WoW but there isn’t a single pool. Each attack gives one strike of adrenaline and each skill has its own pool. Every time an adrenaline skill is used it empties it’s own pool and subtracts one strike from every other ability.

AoE= Area of Effect, anything that effects an area rather than a single target. Usually short for AoE damage.

Getting Started

Well, you really need to understand the basics of combat.

The Four Roles

In the end, there are 4 roles in combat and every class can do all 4 of these things to some degree.

1) Damage. The overall goal is to lower your opponent’s life until they die. Attackers deal damage by attacking or applying degenerative conditions. Casters deal damage by casting damaging spells or degenerative hexes.

2) Offensive Disruption. This is anything that a player does to his opponent to keep him from doing what he wants to do (which is probably kill you or your friends). Some examples include:

Choosing your Class/Subclass
You get to choose a primary and secondary class. Choosing a class gives you the ability to use the skills of that class.
Example: A Monk/Mesmer can use all Monk skills, and all Mesmer skills.

But don’t get the wrong idea. You are not actually some hybrid of your two classes. Your primary class determines who you are. This is a permanent decision (as in, you have to make a new character to play as a different primary class). Skills from your primary class will be the only skills you can really use to full effectiveness. Conversely you will not be able to use the Skills of your subclass to maximum effectiveness.

Guild Wars

From the Guild Wars website:

Nightfall adds new features to the world of Guild Wars. Some of these features were designed and implemented after the game manual went to press; these articles provide additional documentation. Other features became available in previous campaigns after Nightfall began or haven’t been documented elsewhere.

Head over to the Nightfall Features Section for more information on the game.

Also this week, the Professions Skills Listing was updated to include all the current information about every skill in the game. Find that wealth of skill info here.
