This blog post talks about a few of the improvements that will be in our Release Candidate (RC) based upon customer feedback. There are many under the hood changes (bug fixes, compatibility fixes, performance improvements, and improvements) across the entire dev team that we just don’t have room to discuss here, but we thought you’d enjoy a taste of some changes made by three of our feature teams: Core User Experience, Find & Organize and Devices & Media. The comments in this article come from a variety of verbatim sources, with identifying information withheld.

Desktop Experience

1. Windows Flip (ALT + TAB) with Aero Peek

We’ve received overwhelmingly positive feedback about Aero Peek and how it helps customers switch windows with increased confidence. Daniel wrote to tell us “I’m wondering why Peek was never implemented for the ALT + TAB window. The thumbnails look/behave the same way as the taskbar thumbnails when you hover the mouse over them. It seems logical that they would exhibit the peek behavior, too”. We decided to make this change since we heard many requests for it. One can still quickly flip between and cycle through running windows using the ALT+TAB keys, but when more window information is needed Aero Peek will appear. This is triggered by a time delay as you pause while keyboarding through running windows.

When the credit crunch and the financial turmoil first hit Wall Street, the tech sector remained blissfully untouched by the market weakness. However, as the economy has sunk into a recession and consumer spending slowed, the tech sector has at last been dragged into the muck and the mire.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday that from now on the company will post proposed changes to its terms of service and other policies for member input. If more than 7,000 people comment, the policy will be put to a vote and the result “will be binding if more than 30% of all active registered users vote.” Based on Facebook’s current 175 million user base, that’s nearly 53 million people. What isn’t clear is what happens if voter turnout is less than 30% which seems pretty likely given that not all Facebook users are as passionate about terms of service as the thousands who protested Facebook’s last attempt to change its policies regarding its rights to re-use user data.

Zuckerberg made it very clear, however, that he’s not turning over the keys to the boardroom. It affects issues like data ownership and privacy but not the company’s products and services. “There will be hundreds and thousands of product changes going forward, and that’s not what we’re talking about. This is about the rules and framework,” he said in a press conference.
