In one word, funny! In three words, funny as hell!

It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of Microsoft or not, some things are just too funny, either way. This youtube video is one of those funny demo moments, maybe not quite as funny as the BSOD video with Bill Gates but close.

We’ve been working hard and playing harder to bring you the release of version 1.3 for Quake 4.

This update includes a host of new and community requested features such as: more agile player movement, weapon balance adjustments, a single ambient light option, improved rendering and cpu peformance and much more.

We are also excited to introduce some brand new elements to Quake 4:

  • New gametype – DeadZone
  • New multiplayer weapon – Napalm Launcher
  • 8 new professionally made maps
  • 4 revized maps for additional DeadZone support
  • “Buy” mode server option that allows you to purchase weapons and equipment.

We hope everyone enjoys the new content, features and fixes! For a complete list of changes, please see the README (Read More…).

The 1.3 update affects pure server and protocol consistency. Therefore, players who update to 1.3 from ANY previous version will only be able to connect and play against other 1.3 users. Save games and demos created on any previous version of the game will not be compatible with the 1.3 update.”

Beginning on Tuesday, the band put up four of its records — “Kill ‘Em All,” “Ride The Lightning,” “Master of Puppets” and “…And Justice For All” — for sale on U.S. and Canadian versions of the popular online music retailer.

Fans may buy tracks a la carte for 99 cents or purchase the albums, starting at $9.90.

In a posting on the group’s Web site, the band acknowledged that fans have been increasingly buying music online and said it added some previously unreleased live tracks recorded in Seattle in 1989 to each of the albums to entice those who already own copies.

A Metallica song is still worth 99 cents? Well, the band has always been ambitious.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the first plane to the United States,” Mitnick, 42, said Wednesday from his hospital room in the Colombian capital, where he said he’d been laid up for about three days with a bad flu…

Mitnick blamed Bogota’s 8,700-foot (2,650-meter) elevation and a prescription drug he was taking for that trip to the hospital.

This time it was simply a nasty flu, accompanied by a fever reaching 40 degrees centigrade (104 degrees Fahrenheit), that prevented Mitnick from attending a big weekend hacker’s conference in New York.

“I tried to get to the airport to get to the plane to New York and just couldn’t make it,” he said.

What an intriguing story; a man with the flu. Well, it is freaking Kevin Mitnick. Anyway, I guess I’m glad he’s getting better as when I first began reading I wondered if he had died and felt a small sense of loss for it.

CNETThe historical trend for modern technologies has been innovation first, attempts at commercialization second and, inevitably, security breaches third (if not earlier). The Internet accelerated that cycle to new heights even in the days of early dial-up access, as Kevin Mitnick showed the world, and the Web has since produced all manner of hacks, viruses, malware, phishing and other threats. It only makes sense to expect more of the same in the openness of social networking.

This mass medium, more than any other, reflects all strata and sectors of society–good and bad. And just as is the case in brick-and-mortar neighborhoods, it’s naturally prudent to be aware of potential risks and to take reasonable precautions against virtual attacks. But perhaps the most important lesson from real life is not to panic.

AOL

Strange that my first two posts since returning to the scene involve free software. Maybe I should take hiatuses more often. Here’s possible freebie number 2. OK. OK. I know. If you’re reading this then you’re most likely computer-literate and enjoy the fact that you can get Winrar for free but this AOL story is only something to pass on to Grandma or Mom and Pops and chuckle about with friends that free is still too much. LOL. Either way, here it is as it’s still an interesting development.

Time Warner, whose shares touched a two-year low in mid-July, is set to introduce on Aug. 2 its fourth plan in five years to save online unit AOL.

AOL is widely expected to announce that it will give its e-mail and Web services away for free, hoping to win back customers who have switched to other free services from rivals like Google and Yahoo.

The new strategy, which will be discussed at a Time Warner board meeting in New York on Thursday, aims to boost online advertising sales. But analysts say it is a risky move as its subscription business currently accounts for 80 percent of AOL’s revenue.

AOL is still expected to continue to charge for dial-up Internet access, but it will no longer advertise the service.

“I think a lot is riding on Aug. 2,” said Larry Haverty, a portfolio manager at Gamco Investors, which owned 14.1 million shares of Time Warner as of March 31. “People like us have been patient with strategy. From what I’ve heard, I’m comfortable.
